<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
Half the cases I do are because of divorce. The other half are businesses. Divorce cases are called “domestic” cases.</div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Most guys are into technology. Some are more sophisticated than others. Often, in a divorce situation a guy taps a phone or puts a listening device (bug) in the house. A lot of people live together while they’re going through a divorce. Some even sleep in the same bed together!</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">All a guy has to do is go into Radio Shack. He buy a device to tap your phone, or buy a few voice-activated recorders and hid them in an inconspicuous places, like inside a plant, on a book shelf, or under a sofa.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">If he taps your phone with a device from Radio Shack. Trace all your phone wires from your telephone to the wall jack. If you see a splitter watch out! Splitters are in the wall jack. You can trace them to a recorder. Usually, their hidden under a bed or other furniture.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">If the phone number is in his name and if he has another apartment, he might have tapped your phone another way. Call the phone company and ask them if there is an OPX (off-premise extension) or a FX (foreign exchange) on your line. (If the phone isn’t in his name he might talk them into doing anyway.)</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">All he has to do is lift the phone quietly when he’s in his apartment and listen in. Of course, every time the phone rings he would do the same thing.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Or, he can buy a GPS tracker online and track you on his laptop. They’re attached by magnets so it’s easy to place one on the bottom of your car, and remove it too.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">One time I had a woman who was married hire me. She wanted to check her car for a GPS tracker. It seems that she had a boyfriend. I found one and removed it. It probably ended up in her garage.</span></div>

<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
So often when I do sweeps at a home or business people ask me, “How can I prevent eavesdropping in the future?”</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<br /><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Let me share a few tips:</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Make sure you know everyone who comes into your home or office. If a telephone or cable company employee comes in, check their identification, or call the company to see if they belong here.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Do background checks on employees, even household employees. They may not be who they say they are.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Don’t accept electronic gifts, such as clock radios, lamps, calculators, or other instruments, especially from people you don’t trust.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">If overnight mail or a package comes from someone who is on vacation, put it in a soundproof room, not on the person’s desk. Some eavesdroppers have been known to send a Fedex to someone they know who is on vacation -- with a bug in it. They can here all the conversation in the office.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Finally, If you see an unaccounted cell phone, remove the battery. Cell phones are the biggest bugs right now. They can listen to everything within 30 feet.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br /></span></div>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-44797135348574269842012-02-28T11:57:00.001-05:002012-02-28T11:57:25.540-05:00Listening device found in car<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1ex; margin-left: 1ex; margin-right: 1ex; margin-top: 1ex;">
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/" style="color: #336699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Sherlock Investigations</a> got a call on a Sunday from a client in Staten Island who thought her cellphone might be <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=debugging" style="color: #336699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">bugged</a>. I asked if it was a smart phone? “No,” she replied. “Just an ordinary cellphone.” Thinking it was not bugged, I asked, “Where do you mostly talk on your phone.”</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">“In my car,” she said. “Maybe your car is bugged,” I said.</span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">So I, and my equipment, headed to Staten Island. She told me she was going through a nasty divorce. Her husband owned a chain of pharmaceutical companies and traveled a lot.</span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">Her car was parked on the street. It was a new Jeep SUV. I inspected the car top to bottom. Nothing. Sitting in the driver’s seat, I still had the feeling that the car was bugged.</span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">I looked into the rearview mirror. Then I saw it. It was burred screw on the map light just above the mirror. Knowing that it was a new car I knew that it was unlikely the bulb in the map light had been replaced. It was more like that it had been tampered with. </span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">I removed the two screws in the map light and found a tiny microphone and small circuit board—about the size of a postage stamp—with two wires leading from them. One wire went to the battery, and the other went to a cellphone hidden in the roof.</span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">When the estranged husband wanted to listen in to his wife on her cellphone, he would call the hidden cellphone. Of course, it didn’t ring. If his wife was in the car at the time and on her phone, he could listen to her side of the conversation.</span> </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">I cut the wires and removed the phone. All the numbers he called from on trips around the country were on the registered on the phone. My client told me that two weeks ago her husband had taken the car in for “servicing.” She thought he was being uncharacteristically nice.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">She gave the spy cellphone and my written report to her lawyer. What her husband did was a crime. I don't know the outcome of the divorce or the illegal bugging.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">A physical <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=debugging" style="color: #336699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">inspection</a> is necessary in finding potential hidden eavesdropping devices. <div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="letter-spacing: -1px;">I looked on the Internet for “how to find bugging devices in your house of car.” What I found was misleading.</span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px; min-height: 21.0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="letter-spacing: -1px;">The article said, “Listen carefully to electronic devices that use a receiver.” It said, “If you get a buzzing noise you may have a bugging device.” </span><span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">People call me all the time and they say there’s a funny noise or clicking on their phone. If your phone is wiretapped there won’t be any noise at all. If the authorities tap your phone they do it from the central office of the phone company. It, too, is silent, and undetectable.</span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">“Check under furniture or other nooks and crannies where you’re getting reception problems.” This is partly correct. Most of the eavesdropping equipment I’ve found were located by a physical inspection.</span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">In fact, Research Electronics International, a leading manufacturer of counter-surveillance equipment and one of the foremost training facilities for Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures (TSCM), says, “A physical search is the root of all counter-surveillance work. It also overlaps other procedures. Be thorough and look closely for anything suspicious. Your physical search may be the only method to uncover wired microphones, fiber optic microphones, passive resonators, inactive remote controlled ‘dormant’ devices, or devices which are not generally detectable with counter-surveillance equipment.” </span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">The next piece of information they give I must qualify. The article said to “purchase a professional bug detector.” Unless you know how to operate it it is useless. You have to understand the radio spectrum and GPS trackers thoroughly.</span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">The next piece of advice I highly agree with. “Hire a professional specialization in bug device inspection.” It costs money to do a bug sweep. But, stealing your secrets, or invading your privacy costs more. </span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">A professional TSCM specialist will give you piece of mind. Not only will they do a thorough job looking for any eavesdropping equipment, if they find it, they will document it, remove it, and turn it over to the authorities.</span></div>
<div style="font: 18.0px Times New Roman; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 5.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: -1.5px;">Speaking of the authorities, the next piece of advice the article gives is “call the FBI.” The FBI or police don’t care if you think there are cameras watching you, or you think there’s eavesdropping devices in your car, home or business. In fact, they will probably think you are nuts.</span></div>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-4207916575463961462012-02-14T10:10:00.001-05:002012-02-14T15:35:32.069-05:00Is the cost of a bug sweep worth it?<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">In the world of corporate espionage or government espionage the devices used are extremely sophisticated. Before the partner leaves, and while he still has the authority, he might have an extension of the office phone installed in his home. Just having it installed is legal. Eavesdropping is not.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">In divorce situations, occasionally the wife complains that her soon-to-be-ex inexplicably knows things about her. She tells us "it's as if he tapped my phone or placed a bug in my home or car". He may have done just that.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">Considering what people can learn about you, the cost of electronic sweeps is relatively inexpensive. In fact, some firms have precautionary sweeps done on a regular basis throughout the year.</span><br />

Beware of the private investigator who uses a bug detector obtained from the Internet. Unless he is highly trained, it is useless.</span></blockquote>

<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
I’m getting more calls about GPS trackers than anything else. I sweep at least one car a week. Last year I swept only one car a month.</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<br /><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I asked Jimmie Mesis, the owner of <a href="http://PIgear.com/">PIgear.com</a> and <a href="http://PIMagazine.com/">PIMagazine.com</a>, how many GPS trackers are sold each year. He said, “Hundreds of thousands.” He should know.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I’ve located quite a few so far on cars I’ve swept. They’ve been all attached with magnets underneath the car. They’re very visible in a small black plastic box.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">They’re motion-activated, so you actually have to move the car if you want to use a cell phone finder to reveal their presence. </span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">By the way, cell phones have been the “bug” of choice lately. They don’t ring, they’re easily concealable, and they can be called from anywhere in the world. And, you can hear all the conversation in the room where it’s been hidden. </span></div>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-73507247234159006672012-02-09T09:08:00.000-05:002012-02-09T09:09:28.242-05:00GPS trackers<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 11px;">Hundreds of thousands of GPS trackers are sold each year in the United States. Applications for this live GPS tracking device range from covert tracking, fleet personnel management, theft notification and recovery, athletics tracking, medical patient tracking, infant/children tracking, asset tracking, and freight tracking. Basically any realtime tracking you can think of.</span><br />
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 13.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Small in size (less than 3” wide, 4” long and 1” inch thick), with no external antenna, it could be put underneath your vehicle in a few seconds with powerful magnets.</span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 13.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Police, private investigators, spying mates, and employers can all follow the target vehicle from any Internet (either wifi or 3G) connected computer. It sends out a signal every 10 seconds to let them know where the vehicle is in real time. There is a motion-detector on GPS trackers that allow the rechargeable battery to last up 10 days.</span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 13.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">You can buy them in spy stores or many online stores. <a href="http://PIgear.com/">PIgear.com</a> sells the PGPTX5 live GPS tracker. It is a tracker that is very easy to use and has no software to install.</span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 13.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">One could be on your car and you don’t even know it. We know GPS trackers. We’ve located dozens on vehicles. An vehicle inspection takes about an hour.</span></div>

<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">A hidden GPS unit can usually be located with a visual inspection.</span></div>
<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 17.0px;">

<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If you have a baby monitor you might be letting people inadvertently into your home.</span></div>
<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 17.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If you have a 900 MHz cordless phone throw it in the trash. With a scanner from Radio Shack everyone can hear you!</span></div>
<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 17.0px;">

<div style="color: #444444; font: 15.0px Arial; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If you have a "dumb" phone, versus a "smart" (like an iPhone or Blackberry) phone, the chances are of getting spyware on your cellphone are almost nil.</span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Helvetica; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 19.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">There are lip readers who can tell what people are saying with binoculars. That's why football coaches cover their mouths when they speak.</span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Helvetica; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 19.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">One of the most common form of eavesdropping is simply listening through walls.</span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Helvetica; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 19.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If the authorities tap your phone they do it from the central office of the phone company and it is undetectable.</span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Helvetica; line-height: 14.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 19.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">A simple, no frills cell phone will prevent phone hacking. A simple cell phone doesn't have enough memory to store spyware.</span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If someone has ordered an extension phone in their home they can listen-in on calls from their former home or former office.</span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Helvetica; line-height: 19.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 19.0px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Most hidden GPS units are easily spotted. Look for a black plastic box under your car.</span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">When doing a bug sweep, remove all the outlet covers and look in there. There should be only 3 wires attached (one a ground).</span></div>

The woman thought there were video cameras watching her every move.<br />
<br />
I really didn't want to do the job. A lot of paranoid people think that somebody is watching them. Reluctantly, I came out on Friday night.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, I did. I found three hidden cameras in a studio apartment. Apparently, her boyfriend installed them when she was on vacation (he's a contractor). He said he was going to "make over her apartment." He did.<br />
<br />
There was a hidden video camera in her buzzer that opened the front door. It looked on her bed. There was another in the smoke detector (pictured). It looked at her dinner table. There was another in her mantle piece, that he cleverly built, that looked on her couch.<br />
<br />
Talk about jealous boyfriends! He had all the bases covered.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMAcDUPRkz4v2sDvIngtpu9XTm-mgDlu4bcBZD-JOpnDhEfzXzBCOoSeKRMFvVdmZLQbKB0Sl9MLIHq6fBv5d3X9LyKakMjfCKfHvhyIwbax21J50yHqcQ1W-gvHJA9iaZpU5T/s1600/IMG_1975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMAcDUPRkz4v2sDvIngtpu9XTm-mgDlu4bcBZD-JOpnDhEfzXzBCOoSeKRMFvVdmZLQbKB0Sl9MLIHq6fBv5d3X9LyKakMjfCKfHvhyIwbax21J50yHqcQ1W-gvHJA9iaZpU5T/s320/IMG_1975.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Of course, she broke up with him right away. She suspected the cameras from something he said. So, I'll never doubt another woman who says she suspects cameras in her apartment.Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-72469926739362747382011-08-11T16:23:00.002-04:002011-08-11T16:23:35.217-04:00Bug Sweeps on You Tube<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nH2xqFKsS4">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nH2xqFKsS4</a>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-84186288450218368922011-04-18T18:09:00.000-04:002011-04-18T18:09:20.014-04:00Bug sweep of a car in Connecticut<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxB-cf2FApvFkq7d1bsK6KWTmOeC6xmuP_EIFi4xVVdl_JLJbPAHNbgXneZKFz8xB_Fe2KfQbRZy7JxwkiIH40WerXsHY1HycT-r8vaFMpXnv5oRmMloNKjHr7-o2d7G-dpYh0/s1600/IMG_1942.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxB-cf2FApvFkq7d1bsK6KWTmOeC6xmuP_EIFi4xVVdl_JLJbPAHNbgXneZKFz8xB_Fe2KfQbRZy7JxwkiIH40WerXsHY1HycT-r8vaFMpXnv5oRmMloNKjHr7-o2d7G-dpYh0/s320/IMG_1942.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>The other day I was called to a rush job on a car in Greenwich, Connecticut. <br />
<br />
After checking carefully under the dashboard, air vents for hidden microphones, and under the driver's seat for microphones or recorders, I popped the hood and checked for connections on the battery.<br />
<br />
Then, I went around the vehicle underneath. I started on the right side. When I got to the back right side I spotted it with my flashlight.<br />
<br />
A plastic box about 6 x 10 inches was on the body just behind the right rear wheel. Of course, it was held on to the body by a powerful magnet. It was an active GPS unit. An active GPS unit will tell a laptop anywhere in the world via cell phone where the vehicle is at any given moment.<br />
<br />
I pulled it off and put it on the rear seat to photograph it. Then, I placed it back to where it was. The client was delighted. I don't know what they'll do with the information I discoverd. I'm just paid to find bugs and GPS units.Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-50273701609416978902011-03-18T09:48:00.000-04:002011-03-18T09:48:41.808-04:00Bug sweeps: Redesigning our web site to reflect the sameAt Sherlock Investigations we're called to detect wiretaps and "bugs" more than any other investigation. So, we're redesigning our website to reflect that aspect of our business. In a little while, we're going to shift solely to wiretap and bug detection.<br />
<br />
Since 1995 we've been locating people, performing background checks, doing surveillance, and a host of other things. That's going to change. Of course, we'll continue to do that for established clients, including one client who engages us to do counterfeit merchandise investigations.<br />
<br />
Now, our site is going to feature a list of: Offices, Homes, Computers, Cell Phones, and Automobiles, and the various ways we tackle wiretap and bug detection for each category. The Automobile section also covers active and passive GPS units.<br />
<br />
The Computers section will tell you how to save $100 by obtaining a free program that you can run on your computer to uncover spyware.<br />
<br />

A "bug" may be turned off, the battery dead, or a recorder may be voice-activated.<div><br /></div><div><div>Research Electronics International, a leading manufacturer of counter-surveillance equipment, and having one of the foremost training facilities for Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures, says: </div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><i><br /></i></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; font-style: italic; ">"A physical search is the root of all counter-surveillance work. Typically, bugs in cars are transmitted by a cleverly hidden cell phone. Some of these cell phones have an extension microphone and a cord going to the battery for power (see photo). They are difficult to detect.<div><br /></div><div>All bugs in autos are transmitters, either powered by a cell phone, or a stand-alone transmitter, often attached to the radio's antenna. Of course, sometimes a person hides a voice-activated recorder within proximity of the driver. Then they retrieve it later to hear what's been said in what you assumed was complete privacy.</div><div><br /></div><div>GPS units are very popular. There are two types: active and passive. With an active GPS the eavesdropper can see in real-time where the driver goes from his laptop. A passive GPS device must be retrieved and then the eavesdropper can see where the car has traveled from his computer.</div><div><br /></div><div>GPS units can be as small as a pack of gum. They're black, which makes them difficult to locate, and can be placed under the car, in the grill, under the seats, in the glove compartment....almost anywhere.</div><div><br /></div><div>When placed underneath the car by magnets they can be removed instantly.</div><div><br /></div><div>If someone knows who you speak to, and knows the conversation you had with them, and you have spoken with that person in the car, you are probably being eavesdropped on. Or, if someone knows where you have traveled they may have placed a GPS device in your car.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have equipment that can locate active and inactive bugs as well as both passive and active GPS units. Clients can drive their cars to our location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan or we can come to their residence or parking space.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have found more eavesdropping devices planted in cars than we have in either homes or offices.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-67467202706724294112010-08-09T14:06:00.003-04:002010-08-09T14:20:08.327-04:00Bed bugs? Check out your exterminator!<!--StartFragment--> <p class="MsoNormal">We got a call from a guy who’s now living in Motel 6. At first he had bed bugs and now he’s homeless.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">As a solution to his bed bug problem he went on the Internet to find an exterminator. He found one nearby who had a nice website, and the exterminator claimed he had 30 years experience.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> He hired him. The exterminator wanted $5000 down, but it was guaranteed to eliminate the bed bugs. He paid. Then the exterminator came after him for another $5000. He still hadn’t done anything yet! (I know, you ask how the guy could be so stupid. Con men get the word “con” from “confidence.” There are many kinds of cons, from your neighborhood spiritual advisor to Bernie Madoff.)</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Anyway, then the guy lost his job and couldn’t make his mortgage payments, and now he’s living in Motel 6. (Anybody want to buy a house with bed bugs?)</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> Finally, he checked the exterminator out by going to the county courthouse. The exterminator had a long list of suits, judgments, and a couple of bankruptcies. The guy who called us now has a suit against the exterminator. (Lots of luck.)</p> <p class="MsoNormal">At Sherlock Investigations we can check out any contractor, in any state. Whether you hire some to put in a pool, or exterminate bed bugs, let us check ‘em out first!</p> <!--EndFragment-->Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-8214492233416516322010-07-22T12:19:00.001-04:002010-07-22T12:21:18.418-04:00Spies Online - Newsweek interviews Porteous<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; One of the things I wanted to sell were various kinds of bug detectors since I already did bug detection anyway and could teach people how to use the devices.<div><br /></div><div>I would have to pay first and last month, plus a security deposit, and invest in the inventory. A couple of my friends, Jimmy Mesis, who owns <a href="http://www.pigear.com/">pigear.com</a>, and Michael Jackson, who owns <a href="http://www.mjelectronics.com/">mjelectronics.com</a>, have spy shops on the Internet where you can buy all kinds of devices. I'd be in competition with them, and I didn't want that.<br /><div><br /></div><div>A lot of the bug detectors you can buy online work quite well, if you know how to use them. I've had some clients that bought various kinds of bug and camera detectors who had no clue how to use them. Then they called me.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, I decided not to open the shop. I still have mixed feelings about it, but I think I made the right decision.</div></div>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-72196553144458956972010-07-07T10:27:00.001-04:002010-07-07T10:29:18.586-04:00Gay-friendly private investigators<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 13.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana">Sherlock Investigations proudly serves the gay and lesbian community in New York City and elsewhere. I quickly observed several “no-no’s.” First among them was the four speakers from which music was being piped. Speakers have the same features as microphones. It would be necessary to disconnect the speakers.<br /><br />In the center of the table was a speakerphone used for conference calls. My plan was to check it thoroughly for wiretaps.<br /><br />There were enormous windows overlooking Manhattan. Great view, but a laser could be aimed at those windows which would be able to pick up conversations around the conference table. Glass can act as a diaphragm such as are in microphones. Heavy curtains would have to be installed that could be drawn shut during meetings. They would also help to absorb the sound in the room.<br /><br />Of course, I would have the conference room completely swept for electronic bugs. Every bug has to have a power source. It is common today to have a bug wired directly into the building’s power source. Usually, an electronic bug is placed in a wall outlet or in a lamp.<br /><br />Unfortunately, employees are often the source of leaks. I would recommend that those attending meetings not bring their cell phones in to the conference room. The employees might not even knowingly be the source of the leak, but their cell phones might have been compromised. Cell phones can be used as listening devices.<br /></p><p>You can purchase white-noise machines which do a fairly good job at masking voices, too. Some buy cellphone blockers, which are illegal in the United States.<br /><br />A more elaborate security step would be to build a Faraday cage (a copper wire-enclosed room) or paint the room with RF shielding paint which is quite an expensive undertaking.</p><div class="im">If you have any questions or need a <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=bug-detectors">sweep</a>, contact me.</div><p></p></div></span>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-34715231677256728702010-05-07T11:07:00.001-04:002010-05-07T12:12:32.886-04:00Wiretaps at the central office can't be detected<span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:Times;font-size:medium;" ><div style="font-family: Arial,Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><p></p><blockquote type="cite">Businesses that have their offices <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=bug-detectors">swept</a> for eavesdropping devices should be aware that wiretaps from the phone company's central office cannot be detected. This happens when a particular law enforcement agency, whether it be the NYPD or the FBI, convince a judge that criminal activity might be taking place. They then are able to get a court order to tap the company’s phones.</blockquote><blockquote type="cite">Whenever the Technical Division of <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/">Sherlock Investigations</a> does an eavesdropping sweep to look for bugs and wiretaps, we caution potential clients that if they they are being investigated by a law enforcement agency we will will not do the sweep.<br /><br />Typically, according to the FBI, they tap a phone at the phone company's central office. They then have the call forwarded to the FBI office at 26 Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan. There, they listen to the phone conversations and record them on to tape. In spite of ads shown on the Internet, when the phone tap is happening at the central office, it cannot be detected.<br /><br />The Galleon Group, a hedge fund based in New York City, had their offices swept at least twice. The CEO was arrested by the FBI for insider trading last year. In this case, a former employee cooperated with the authorities, which then tapped his, and others, personal cell phones as well as residential phones. It is not clear whether the office of The Galleon Group's phones were actually tapped. If they were tapped, it would have been done at the phone company's central office.</blockquote><p></p></div></span>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-21010985701262359812010-05-03T12:17:00.004-04:002010-05-13T11:17:35.995-04:00Is the cost of an electronic sweep worth it?<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 18px;font-family:Arial,Helvetica,Verdana,sans-serif;font-size:13px;" ><blockquote type="cite" style="border-width: 0px; padding: 5px 60px 5px 40px; margin: 0px; text-align: justify; background-image: url("http://image.examiner.com/img/new_blockquote.gif"); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-weight: normal; font-size: 12px; border-style: none; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-style: italic; background-position: 5px 5px;"><a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=bug-detectors">Electronic eavesdropping sweeps</a> can be expensive. (The Technical Division of Sherlock Investigations is in the mid-range category.) The more sophisticated the threat the more expensive sweeps can be.<br /><br />In the world of corporate espionage or government espionage the devices used are extremely sophisticated. The security office of corporations and embassies often have their own sweep teams.<br /><br />Most people, though, don’t deal in such high-security threats. Still, they need protection, because the threats are often real.<br /><br />As often happens, an employee that leaves to join or start another company often steals secrets. Occasionally, he will bug the previous office so that information can continue to be transmitted to a listening post elsewhere.<br /><br />Business partners can have a parting of the ways. Before the partner leaves, and while he still has the authority, he might have an extension of the office phone installed in his home. Just having it installed is legal. Eavesdropping is not.<br /><br />In divorce situations, occasionally the wife complains that her soon-to-be-ex inexplicably knows things about her. She tells us "it's as if he tapped my phone or placed a bug in my home or car". He may have done just that.<br /><br />Considering what people can learn about you, the cost of electronic sweeps is relatively inexpensive. In fact, some firms have precautionary sweeps done on a regular basis throughout the year.<br /><br />Remember, Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (Bug Sweeps) is a technical skill , not an investigative one. Beware of the private investigator who uses a bug detector obtained from the Internet. Unless he is highly trained, it is useless.</blockquote><blockquote type="cite" style="border-width: 0px; padding: 5px 60px 5px 40px; margin: 0px; text-align: justify; background-image: url("http://image.examiner.com/img/new_blockquote.gif"); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-weight: normal; font-size: 12px; border-style: none; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-style: italic; background-position: 5px 5px;"><br />If you need a skilled consultant, contact us.</blockquote></span>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14497019.post-19647696011028200942010-04-30T09:43:00.003-04:002010-05-13T11:18:27.877-04:00Sweeping a car for eavesdropping devices...without any special equipment<span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:Times;font-size:medium;" ><div style="font-family: Arial,Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><p></p><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="border-left: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 0.8ex; padding-left: 1ex;">Sherlock Investigations is often called to sweep vehicles.<br /><br />Eavesdropping devices placed in vehicles are often dormant. A hidden cell phone is hard to detect unless it is active, or transmitting.<br /><br />There are two types of GPS trackers, active and passive. An active GPS device signals where the car is at all times. It has a built-in cell phone that calls the person who placed it about every two minutes and can be tracked via a computer.<br /><br />One has to actually retrieve a passive GPS unit. When it is connected to a computer it shows where the car has travelled.<br /><br />Usually, GPS units only operate when the car is moving. This is meant to save the life of a battery. So, if you’re looking for a GPS on a vehicle and it is parked, there is no movement, and so the GPS unit is dormant.<br /><br />The best way to <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/index.php?page=bug-detectors">sweep</a> a car is physically. A hand-held mirror is a good tool to use. (Be sure to get a plastic one, in case you touch any wires.)<br /><br />The search should be done everywhere. Under the seats, in the glove compartment, under the dash, under the fabric in the back window etc.<br /><br />Under the dash there are many wires and devices you have probably never noticed before. Check for wires that are sloppily installed and do not seem to be installed by the factory. Look for extra wires going to the antenna.<br /><br />Sit in the driver’s seat and look around. Check the overhead map light, and the air vents. What you are looking for is a tiny microphone.<br /><br />Next, check the undercarriage of the car. A GPS unit is usually attached by a magnet, or several magnets. It will be in a black plastic box, perhaps the size of a pack of cigarettes. (Google "GPS units" so you know what to look for.) Move around the exterior of the car carefully looking in every spot of the undercarriage.<br /><br />This is best done if you have a mechanic put the car up on a lift. The mechanic can then help since he knows what belongs there.<br /><br />Make sure to inspect the grill and the bumpers. Remember, GPS devices can be very small.<br /><br />If you have questions, or need a professional sweep, <a href="http://www.sherlockinvestigations.com/">contact</a> me.</blockquote><p></p></div></span>Skipp Porteoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03851061136449491871noreply@blogger.com1
